What is play therapy?...

What is play therapy?...

Play therapy is a highly specialised therapeutic intervention designed for children aged 3-13. Established with foundations in child development and psychology, and approached through a trauma-informed and neuro-affirming lens.

Play therapy utilises the therapeutic powers of play, the provision of a safe and secure environment and a strong therapeutic relationship with the therapist. With this, children are able to navigate their emotional world, heal from trauma, develop cognitive, social, and emotional skills, and establish appropriate coping mechanisms.

Our Therapist

My name is Gemma, and I am a Masters-qualified Play Therapist. I earned my Master’s degree in Play Therapy from Deakin University in 2022, following a Bachelor's degree in Behavioural Studies (Psychology) from Swinburne University of Technology in 2016. I have been practicing as a Child Play Therapist since 2021 and hold full registration with the Australasia Pacific Play Therapy Association (APPTA). In addition to my professional experience working with children, I am also a mother to children living with neurodivergence and disability, which deepens my understanding and empathy in my therapeutic work.

Child play therapy

Directive therapy

This directive approach to play therapy involves the therapist assigning tasks and activities tailored to the child’s specific goals. It is typically employed in interventions with a limited number of sessions or time constraints. Additionally, this approach proves effective when a child needs structure, boundaries, and clear guidance to foster development. Techniques such as Learn to Play are examples of this method.

Family therapy

Filial therapy and AutPlay therapy are family-centered approaches that engage the entire family unit in the child's therapeutic process. In these therapies, parents or caregivers are provided with support and taught the essential skills needed to become the primary agents of change for their child. The goal of these approaches is to enhance the parents' understanding of their child and strengthen the parent-child relationship, fostering a more effective and supportive environment for the child's growth and development.

Non-directive therapy

A child-centered or non-directive approach is ideal when a child thrives by leading the play. This method allows the child to process and develop at their own pace, with the therapist present to create a safe, supportive environment essential for the child's growth, healing, and development. By encouraging the child to play and express themselves freely, this approach helps foster the development of their identity, preferences, self-esteem, and confidence.
